Chairperson's Message

07 April 2022

Hello to all of our SARIPA members,

As we head into our April holiday period, I just wanted to bring you up to speed with some news, statistics and information about our upcoming events.

We have just held our Northern Region Conference which was successful and attended by 80 delegates. The morning was highly informative with good debate and discussion on both insolvency and business rescue topics. Our members were clearly very happy to see each other again at a face-to-face live event. This was the first face to face conference since our Annual Conference held at Zimbali in November 2019. Our Young Bloods held a very successful networking event on the 1st of April at WH Auctioneers and Properties.  The regions are preparing conferences/events in the Western Cape, KZN and the Eastern Cape - so watch out for notifications and be sure to save the dates for these upcoming events.

The Board has started out the year working on various workstreams including the SARIPA Mentorship programme, engagements with the major financial institutions through the SARIPA Lenders Forum and further discussions with AFSA regarding the launch of a bespoke dispute resolution mechanism for business rescue.

The SARIPA/INSOL International Programme in Insolvency Law and Practice is proceeding full steam ahead with 33 students registered and attending the course.

We continue to interact and engage with the Master's Office, CIPC and SARS on various important issues relevant to our members.

SARIPA membership currently stands at 691 (we are getting close to that 700 member mark!!). We remain the 5th largest Member Organisation of INSOL International across the Globe. Of the 691 members, we have 170 Young Bloods, 142 designated Business Rescue Practitioners and 252 designated Insolvency Practitioners.

Reflecting on these membership numbers, we are proud to say that SARIPA remains the most relevant and well-supported Restructuring, Insolvency and Business Rescue organisation on the continent.

In addition, we have had held two well-attended Webinars:

  • Travel and tourism struggles:  60 attendees
  • Amendments to BR plans: 92 attendees

Just that you know we have some great webinar sessions coming up in the next few weeks/months ahead –

  • Thursday, 12 May 2022
Do Suretyships and Guarantees have Staying Power in Insolvency and Restructurings?
This panel will focus on the difference between suretyships and guarantees and the impact that insolvency and restructuring have on these security instruments.
  • Thursday 19th May 2022
Chasing Dispositions and Recovering Preferences: What are the tricks for success?

One should be aware that every webinar is a sponsored event and we invite any of the firms out there who wish to sponsor a webinar to get hold of Angela at the SARIPA office.

And then most importantly we are already busy planning for our end of year Annual Conference:

221110 conf save date 01

This year our conference will be held in George, at the Fancourt Golf Estate on 10 and 11 November. This will be our first annual face-to-face conference in two years and we have no doubt that it will be very well attended. The SARIPA annual conference is our flagship event on the calendar, and I encourage all of you to attend. The content will be (as always) of the highest order and we can look forward to some great sessions that will keep you all on the edge of your seats. As always, there will be plenty of time to engage, network with each other, renew old friendships, make new ones and play golf! The official invitation will go out in June 2022, but in the meantime, please book the conference dates in your diaries!!

INSOL International is having their conference in London in the period 26 – 28th June. INSOL initially thought that they would attract approximately 300/350 delegates to the conference. As of last week, INSOL has confirmed that they have just over 800 delegates coming to London for the conference. Clearly, an indication of the pent up demand for international restructuring and insolvency professionals and delegates to meet face to face and to most importantly network with each other. I am one of the technical co-chairs and I can tell you that the sessions are going to be incredible, with plenty of soft topics, blended in with traditional learnings on international insolvency and restructuring issues. So, if you can attend, please register – details for registrations for the conference are at

I must also pause to thank Rene, Angela and Wiida for all the hard work being put in this year for SARIPA and a special thanks goes out to Haroon and all of the members of the SARIPA board for their continued effort, enthusiasm and hard work thus far in 2022.

Lastly, I wish all of the SARIPA members a great April holiday break and I hope to see you all soon at one of our upcoming SARIPA events.

With thanks,
Dr Eric Levenstein
SARIPA Chairperson
